I feel wheel vibration when speed over 60 mph

Why I feel wheel vibration when my speed hit 60 mph on the car?

Something you need to know about Tire and Wheel Balancing

Try to maintaining the best wheel and tire balancing as possible. It is very critical to maintain your rims and tires balanced all the time. When there’re out-of-balancing wheels and tires happen, means unevenly tire wear and poor driving conditions, even an unsafe steering and handling condition. This could eventually cause the tire blow-out or damaged suspension and steering components. Check with your local tires or rims shops and have them check the rims and tires balance once a while, would be a good investment which eventually save you some money on replacing tires or suspension parts. No matter where you buying tires or rims and tires, always double check what kind of tire mounting and balancing machines the shop use before you commit to purchase rims or tires and install them on site. Only some the best wheel balancer will give you the best balancing result.

When there’re vibrations happen, not always caused by bad rims and tires balancing. Wrong wheels to vehicle axles contribute most of the vibrations problem when you happen have Custom wheels or Aftermarket plus size alloy wheels and tires on your rides. Sometimes, a set of hub centric rings will solve the problem right after you put them on.  And they are very affordable. Make sure you have them when putting custom rims and tires if the wheel not specially made for your vehicle.

The Causes of Wheel Vibrations and Remedies

Type of Wheel Out of Balances

There’s three types of wheel imbalances, that is Static wheel Imbalance, Dynamic Imbalance and Wheel Force Variation:

Static Imbalance

Static Imbalance: Occurs when there is a heavy or light spot in the tire which cause the wheel and tire up-and-down motion which creating a hop or vertical vibration.

Static Wheel Balancing uses a single weight plane to measure the heavy or light spot in the tire which prevents the tire rolling evenly and cause the wheel and tire “up-and-down” motions or vibrations. The Static Imbalance is most easy to be cure even with traditional tire balancers.

Dynamic Wheel Balancing uses two weight planes to detect wheel and tire up-and-down as well as side-to-side wobble or wheel shimmy. Most of tire shops do use this type of tire balancing machines and they are just enough to taking care of most rims and tires balance problems now-a-days. When detect Dynamic Imbalances, the balancing system directs a technician to place counter weights on the rim’s outer surface to offset the imbalance. When the tire balancing system tests for virtually perfect weight distribution, the assembly is in balance and will not vibrate. You should expect a pretty smooth ride and evenly tire wear.

Dynamic Imbalance

Dynamic Imbalance: Occurs when there is unequal weight on one or both sides of the wheel and tire assembly’s lateral centerline, as a result it creating a side-to-side wobble or wheel shimmy.

Wheel Force Variation

Wheel Out of Round

An out of round (runout) tire or wheel could cause wheel vibration.

Stiff Spot on Tire

A stiff spot of tire hitting the road causes vibration.

In some cases, you still feel vibration after Dynamic Wheel Balancing--A perfectly balanced rim and tire can still vibrate due to Force Variation. None of rims or tires are perfect round, even the most expensive or top of the line rims or tires. In some cases, a tire may be manufactured with slightly inconsistent sidewall stiffness. It might leads to a vibration problem when drive on the road. Wheel Force Variation is most frequently due to wheel out-of-round or uneven tread or sidewall stiffness in the tire. Runout is when a tire or wheel is out of round when rolling; frequent causes are a bent wheel or uneven tire wear. When you driving custom wheels with low profile tires, it is very common bent the wheel when hit a pot hole or curve.

Uneven tire tread or sidewall stiffness not only can be found on worn tires, but a few brand new tires also has similar problem. Tires by design are never uniformly flexible throughout the whole tire, nor are they perfectly round.

How to Correct Wheel Force Variation

Match Mounting

OEM Match Mounting matches a high point or stiff spot on a tire with the low spot on the rim, for maximum roundness.

Match mounting:

Match mounting is a process that you mount a tire’s installed position on selected wheel position in order to minimize the Force Variation. All the Original Equipment (OE) rims are required to mark the “low point” while OE Tire manufacturers mark the tire’s “high point”. When mount the tire on wheel, you will need to mount the tire’s ”high point” to wheel’s “low point” in order to correct the Force Variation Imbalance.

Custom wheels and tires to a vehicle, just like jewelry to us. They make your cars or trucks look much nicer than the boring OE rims and tires. Not just look, but performance as well. Most of aftermarket Alloy Wheel manufacturer’s simply never mark their custom rims with “low point” and this make it harder mounting them to the tire’s high point without using a right tire balancer. Luckily Hunter GSP9700 Road Force Measurement Balancer is one of the best machine can do the job. The Hunter GSP9700 Vibration Control System includes Hunter’s exclusive Road Force System to help detect potential tire and wheel uniformity which causes none balance-related vibrations. The Hunter GSP9700 balancer uses a “road roller”, which applies up to 1400lbs of force against the wheel and tire to simulate the road conditions. It can detect the wheel’s low point and tire’s high point, so that the tire technician can do match mounting. The Hunter GSP9700 Balancer is the only tire balancer capable to correct wheel force variation problems.

If a wheel is bent or out of round, it should be replaced right away. It is very common to damage your wheels when you have a set of plus sizing rims and tires. You might have the original 17 inch rim size with 245/50-17 tire on it. When upgrade to 20 rims and tires, in order to maintain a similar overall sizes, you need a set 20 inch rims with 245/35-20 tires on them. Even the overall sizes are about the same, but the 20” tires only give you about 3.4 inch tire sidewall high, when the original one has about 5 inch sidewall high. The reduced tire sidewall high makes it vulnerable when hit a pothole even at regular street driving speed.

Tire Pressure and Wheel Alignment

Improper tire pressure and/or bad alignment also creates and amplifies imbalance and resulting in wheel vibration problems. Alignment can be adjusted and tire pressure should be checked once a while even your vehicle already equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring System to reduce the possible wheel vibration problems.

Steering and Suspension Components

Steering and suspension components need periodic inspection. Those suspension and steering components can eventually wear out and resulting in wheel vibrations. Excessive wheel vibration from other causes can also make steering and suspension components war out much faster.

Other Causes of Wheel Vibrations

  • Wheel to axle mounting error, for example, vehicle axle is 72.56 on most BMW Cars and the wheel center bore size 74.1. This could cause vibration problem because of the gap between vehicle axle and wheel center bore.  A set of Hub Centric Rings could help eliminating the vibration issue right after you put them on.
  • Brake component wear out or failure
  • Drive train or engine component wear out or failure
  • Vehicle component characteristics

A knowledgeable technician with proper training and equipment can diagnose these problems. But, the only way to reduce all of the above mentioned wheel and tire related vibration, is with the Hunter GSP9700 Vibration Control System.
